Notifying Octopus of your move

The first step is telling Octopus Energy about your move before it happens. Log in to your Octopus Energy account at octopus.energy or through the app. Navigate to the "Moving Home" section - it is usually found under "My Account" or "Manage my supply."

Enter your new address and your intended move date. Octopus will handle the meter transfer process, which involves registering your new property's MPAN under your account and arranging final and opening meter reads for both properties.

Give Octopus at least two weeks' notice if you can. This gives enough time to sort out the administration on both sides and prevents any gap in supply. If you notify them with less notice, the transfer can still happen, but it may result in a brief period where your new address is billed under a default supplier tariff until the handover completes.

The process is entirely online. You do not need to call anyone. Octopus is one of the better energy suppliers for handling moves digitally, and their customer service team can resolve complications quickly if anything does not transfer smoothly.

Your new DNO region: how to find it

Your DNO region - the Distribution Network Operator that serves your new address - determines your Octopus Agile prices going forward. It is tied to your physical location, not your account, so moving house means your region may change.

The most reliable way to find your new DNO is using the Energy Networks Association postcode tool at energynetworks.org. Enter your new postcode and the tool returns your new DNO immediately. The whole process takes 30 seconds.

This matters most if you are moving a significant distance. Moving from Edinburgh to London means shifting from South Scotland pricing to London pricing - one of the biggest regional price differences in the UK. Moving within the same city, say from one part of Manchester to another, will typically keep you within the same DNO region and the same price zone.

Moving between England, Scotland, and Wales can produce particularly significant changes. Scotland consistently delivers the lowest Agile prices in Great Britain. Moving north is, from a pure electricity cost perspective, a very good thing.

What happens to your current Agile tariff

Octopus Agile is a variable tariff with no exit fees and no fixed term. When you move house, your Agile tariff transfers to your new address provided two conditions are met.

First, your new property must be served by a smart meter compatible with Octopus's systems. Octopus Agile requires a smart meter because the half-hourly consumption data it provides is how Octopus bills you accurately against each half-hour's price. If your new property has a smart meter already installed, the transfer is straightforward. Octopus simply re-registers it under your account.

Second, your new address must be within the coverage area for Octopus Energy supply. Octopus serves all of Great Britain, so this is rarely an issue except for a small number of properties with unusual supply arrangements.

If your new property does not have a smart meter, you will need one installed before Agile can resume. Octopus will arrange this as part of your move notification. There is no cost for the installation. There may be a wait of a few weeks for the installation appointment, during which you will be on a standard Octopus tariff until the smart meter is fitted and activated.

Updating AgileAlert for your new region

Once you know your new DNO region, updating AgileAlert is the simplest part of the whole process. Open the AgileAlert dashboard and find the region selector dropdown near the top of the price chart. Select your new DNO region from the list.

The price chart updates immediately. You will now see live half-hourly Agile prices for your new area - the actual prices you will be charged, not the prices from your old location.

If you use AgileAlert on multiple devices - for example, a phone and a laptop - you will need to update the region on each device separately. The region preference is stored locally in your browser and does not sync between devices.

This update takes about ten seconds. Do it on moving day, or as soon as you have confirmed your new DNO region. From that point, every price you see on AgileAlert reflects your new home.

Will your new region be better or worse for Agile savings?

The honest answer is: it depends on the direction of your move. Here is a general guide based on the major regional price differences in Great Britain.

Moving from North to South - Scotland or the North of England to London or the South East - generally means moving from cheaper to more expensive Agile regions. Your overnight rates will be higher, your annual saving will be lower, and negative price events will be less frequent. The savings are still real and significant, but expect them to decrease versus what you were seeing before.

Moving from South to North - London or South East to the North of England or Scotland - generally means moving from more expensive to cheaper Agile regions. Your overnight rates improve, your annual saving increases, and you will encounter more frequent plunge pricing events. Moving to Scotland in particular is a meaningful upgrade in Agile pricing terms.

Moving within the same broad region - staying within the same DNO area, or moving between two similarly-priced regions - typically produces minimal change. If you are moving within Greater London, or between two neighbouring English regions, your Agile experience will be broadly similar before and after.

Your annual saving relative to the July 2026 price cap of 26.11p/kWh depends entirely on how much consumption you shift to cheap slots. Moving north increases the gap between your cheapest Agile rates and the price cap baseline, which means the reward for smart appliance timing grows proportionally larger.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my Agile tariff when I move?
Yes, provided your new property has a smart meter. Octopus transfers your Agile tariff to the new address as part of the moving home process. If the new property lacks a smart meter, you will be placed on a standard Octopus tariff temporarily while a smart meter is installed, then moved back onto Agile once it is active. There is no penalty, no exit fee, and no contract break involved in the process.
How do I update AgileAlert when I move?
Open the AgileAlert dashboard and select your new DNO region from the region dropdown at the top of the price chart. The chart updates immediately. Use the Energy Networks Association postcode tool at energynetworks.org to find your new DNO region before making the change, so you select the correct one. The whole process takes under a minute.
What if Octopus doesn't serve my new address?
Octopus Energy serves all of Great Britain, so this is not an issue for the vast majority of moves. If you are moving to Northern Ireland, note that Octopus Agile does not operate there - Northern Ireland has a separate electricity grid and market. If you move to Northern Ireland you will need to find a local supplier. For any address in England, Scotland, or Wales, Octopus can serve you.
